Dramatic bodycam and dashcam footage captured the moment a Texas police officer responded with deadly force after a man pointed a gun at him during a routine traffic stop. Police released the footage to the public on Friday.
Watch the bodycam video below (Warning: Graphic content):
It started like any other traffic stop. Officer Marc Adams, of the Pasadena Police Department, followed the driver for a couple blocks before he eventually pulled over. The suspect then exited his vehicle and ignored the officer’s commands.
“Stay in the vehicle!” the officer is heard shouting in the video. “Show me your hands!”
The man did not comply. Instead, the suspect is seen in the video crouching and retrieving what appears to be a firearm, which he then points directly at Adams.
The officer reacted instantly and fired off a flurry of shots at the suspect, striking and killing him. It wasn’t clear from the video footage if the suspect fired any shots at the officer.
Officer Adams, a 13-year veteran at the police department, is currently on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation.
Pasadena Police Department Asst. Chief Josh Bruegger told KPRC-TV in Houston that Officer Adams is “obviously shaken up.”
“Anytime an officer is placed in a position where he has to take somebody’s life it’s a stressful situation,” he added. “It’s unfortunate the officer was placed in the position but, when the suspect points a weapon directly at the officer the officer really has no choice but to defend himself.”
