Ashton Kutcher is a successful actor, prominent businessman, and proud family man. To top things off, he and his wife, Mila Kunis, share two beautiful children.
But aside from his Hollywood career, Kutcher is also a venture capitalist. The famous actor has successfully invested in various high-tech startups including Skype, Foursquare, Airbnb, Path, and Fab.com.
Indeed, there is no shortage of success in Ashton Kutcher’s life. But when a Christian asked how she could pray for him, Kutcher’s honest response shook me to the core.
From the outside looking in, you would wrongly assume that Ashton Kutcher’s life is perfect.
But when he’s not giving Ted talks, acting, or spending time with his beautiful wife and children; Ashton does something in his “free time” that many of his fans are unaware of.
Last week, Kutcher’s interview the Today show took an unexpected turn when co-host Kathy Lee Gifford asked how they could be praying for him.
Without hesitation Kutcher replied, “You know what you can pray for me about? I’ve got something you can pray about…”
In 2008, Ashton Kutcher co-founded a unique organization called Thorn.
Kutcher explained, “I started a foundation called ‘Thorn’. We’re building digital tools to fight human trafficking.”
Kutcher initially began researching the issue after stumbling across a “Dateline” feature on sex trafficking in Cambodia. The young father was astounded by what he saw.
The actor shared, “I was watching six and seven-year-old girls being raped for profit. I said to myself: I don’t want to live in a world where these things are happening and I’m not doing anything about them.”
That eye-opening documentary proved to be a defining moment in Ashton Kutcher’s life. From that moment onward, Ashton wasn’t content with just being a “star.” Instead, Kutcher set out to use his influence for good.
Kutcher shared, “…I was seized by a feeling of wanting to find the guy who is raping a 7-year-old girl and just beat the (expletive) out of him, really take his guts out,” Kutcher said, his voice rising. “That feeling won’t change for me five or 10 or 20 years from now, wanting to take that guy to the woodshed won’t change, fighting for that girl won’t change. So whether I’m tackling this on a large platform or am just a guy with a sign, I’ll be doing this in 20 years.”
The Thorn Technology Task Force is an initiative comprised of more than 20 technology companies that lend their knowledge, time and resources to monitor the dark corners of the internet for potential danger and fraud. Some of these brands include big names such as Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Twitter, Yahoo!, Snapchat, and Imgur.
Jim Pitkow, Chairman of the Thorn Technical Task Force shared, “New innovations will always be adopted for both good and evil purposes. At Thorn, we tip the scales in favor of good by stopping exploitation and protecting our children.”
Since their debut, Thorn has identified and rescued over 6,000 trafficking victims and captured 2,000 traffickers.
“The average age of a girl involved in the sex trade is 13,” Kutcher says. “And the average man who buys a girl is 30-years-old, has no prior criminal record, and has a well-paying job.”
Thorn has accomplished a great deal, but Kutcher remains determined as ever to confront even the underlying issues.
Kutcher shared, “Our next battle, my next commitment…I’m going to make a pledge that I’m going to eliminate child pornography from the Internet.”
Watch Kutcher’s candid interview on the Today show, as he reveals why sex trafficking and pornography must be stopped:
The truly horrifying statistic is that in 2015, 75% of child sex trafficking survivors surveyed by Thorn were sold online at some point.
A teen recently rescued by Thorn confirmed the awful reality, “People are posted and sold online multiple times a day. As far as the ad that was posted up [for me], there was a girl who eerily looked like me…just [like] you can go find a car, there was a picture, and a description, and a price.”
Please pray for Thorn, and other organizations like it that are working tirelessly to rescue these precious lives. Please pray for the countless innocent lives who have been sold into slavery. May God save them and bring justice! Please share to help raise awareness.
