Dallas Officer Rogelio Santander Dies Day After Shooting — 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

One of the Dallas police officers who was brutally shot by a gunman at a Home Depot on Tuesday afternoon has died from his injuries.

Here are five fast facts you need to know about this tragedy.

1. Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall made the heartbreaking announcement on Wednesday.

“We come before you this morning with broken hearts and we regret to inform you that Officer Rogelio Santander, badge #10934, has succumbed to his injuries,” Hall said. “We are asking that you continue to pray for the family and the DPD family. This is going to be a trying time for us so we’re just asking for your support during this time.”

2. Officer Crystal Almeida and Home Depot loss prevention officer, Scott Painter, are still in critical condition.

Chief Hall said doctors are optimistic about the two surviving victims’ remarkable recoveries following the shooting.

“They are still in critical condition but we are optimistic about what we are seeing with them right now,” Hall added.

Almeida and Painter are now reportedly communicating with doctors and family members through movements.

4. The gunman opened fire after an officer tried to detain him.

Gunfire erupted at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday at a Home Depot in Dallas when additional officers responded to the location.

The suspect reportedly just pulled out a gun and started shooting at the officers. Officer Santander was reportedly shot in the back of the head and Officer Almeida was shot in the face.

4. Police have taken the suspected gunman and cop killer into custody.

Police arrested 29-year-old Armando Juarez and booked him at the Dallas County jail around 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning following a five-hour search and a high-speed police chase.

“We got our man,” Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said during a press conference.

5.  Suspected gunman Armando Juarez  will face justice.

Juarez was already wanted on an outstanding warrant for felony theft. Now, he faces two more counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and will likely face additional charges now that the Officer Rogelio Santander has died from his injuries.
