When I learned the tragic details of this heroic act, I knew this family was in desperate need of our prayers. This truly broke my heart…
When flames suddenly engulfed Erika Poremski’s home, she did everything she could to save her beautiful baby girl — but it simply wasn’t enough.
Erika could hear her 9-month-old daughter, Viviana, crying as she and neighbors tried to save her. As soon as firefighters arrived, Erika told them Viviana was trapped on the second floor.
When firefighters braced the heavy fire and made it into the home, they discovered the unfathomable.
“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her,” Erika said. “I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.”
Erika had burns on her hands and face from when she repeatedly tried to go back into the house to rescue Viviana. Little did Erika know then, God had sent a guardian angel to protect her little baby in the midst of tragedy.
When firefighters entered the home to rescue Viviana, they found Erika’s dog, Polo, in the room with her – and he was covering her with his body.
“She [Viviana] only had burns on her side because of it. He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door,” Erika said.
Paramedics were able to revive Viviana, who has severe burns on her face, arm and side. However, Polo did not survive the fire. Polo’s heroic act saved Viviana’s life, at the price of his own life.
“He was my first baby and now I lost him,” Erika said. “And I’m just praying I don’t lose her. She’s all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don’t understand it. I just don’t know why this stuff happens.”
When I saw the blessings Erika and Viviana received following the fire, I knew God was rewarding Polo’s inspiring act of heroism.
Erika said she is extremely grateful for the support she has received. A GoFundMe page had raised more than $37,000 as of today. The family lost EVERYTHING and Viviana is still in ICU at the children’s hospital, so the donations will help greatly. According to the GoFundMe page, Viviana is burned on 19% of her body and is not awake.
“She’s doing the best she can right now,” Erika said. “And she’s fighting and that’s it. She’s a really good girl. I just hope she’s OK.”
Thank God for Polo and his courageous and selfless act of heroism. Although this story broke my heart, Polo’s act of heroism is truly inspiring. If you’re interested in donating to Erika and baby Viviana’s GoFundMe page, click this link.
