If there’s one place in public society that has become an odd lightning rod for attention, it’s public bathrooms. So if you ever were to hear someone crying in a stall, you should see what’s going on before just simply making fun of it.
Marcus was entering a public restroom when he heard two things. Someone crying, and a teenaged boy laughing mercilessly. He was annoyed by the boy, but knew he had to figure out who was crying and why.
He approached the stall where he heard the crying coming from. It turns out it was an elderly gentleman. He told Marcus he had forgotten to bring his cane into the stall with him and now didn’t have the strength to get out of the stall by himself.
Marcus immediately knew this to be a sensitive situation and was overcome with compassion. The elderly man was able to unlock the stall for Marcus and he helped him get himself together and stand up with dignity and get out.
The gentleman was wearing a Vietnam Vet’s cap and Marcus thanked him for his service to our country. The man told Marcus that this was the most embarrassing moment of his life, but Marcus took the moment to build him up and encourage him instead.
Our elders deserve our respect. When a culture has lost its honor it’s easy to predict where it’s headed if a course correction isn’t made.
This story of reminiscent in principle of Noah when he was found drunk and naked after the flood. One of his sons, Ham, saw him and laughed, while Shem and Japheth approached their father respectfully and covered him up.
There’s always one way to respond, and there’s a Godly, respectful way to respond in any situation.
