The pair hopped on their bicycles and rode off to save the girl. It didn’t matter that they were only boys and no adult was in sight—it was the right thing to do.
It sounds like a scene from the ever-popular drama, Stranger Things, but this happened modern day and the stakes were real for friends, Temar and Chris.
The 15-year-old boys were hanging out together one afternoon when they heard news that a five-year-old neighbor, Jocelyn Rojas, had been kidnapped. The young girl was allegedly playing in her grandmother’s front yard when a stranger took the girl, luring her to his vehicle with the promise of ice cream before he took her by the neck and shoved her inside.
Word quickly spread throughout the neighborhood about little Jocelyn’s abduction and a search party of over 100 people was soon formed. They blocked off streets and a canine unit was commissioned to help search for the girl block by block.
But it was two brave boys, Temar and Chris, deciding to do something a bit unconventional that made all of the difference.
They hopped on their bicycles and nearly a half mile from her home, the boys spotted a maroon sedan with a driver who looked suspicious and elusive.
”Every time we’d go down the street, he’d turn back around, and then … we’ll follow him,” said Temar.
Temar and Chris chased the car for an unbelievable 15 minutes, determined to find out if this car could contain the kidnapper and little Jocelyn. Temar pulled his bike next to the kidnapper in the car and he suspected that this could be the man he was looking for. He knew that something was wrong and with courage only the most amazing boys could possess, Temar locked eyes with him and said “I see you.”
It was then that a miracle happened. Amazingly, the kidnapper let the girl go.
“He stopped at the end of the hill and let her out, and she ran to me and said that she needed her mom,” Temar said.
They weren’t sure if the kidnapper gave up because the boys were following him, but no matter the cause, it was enough to know that Jocelyn was home safe. Her family and friends couldn’t thank the two boys enough.
“He’s our hero. There is just no words to say,” Jocelyn’s grandmother Tracey Clay said.
The kidnapper was apprehended the following day thanks in large part to the descriptions given by the boys.
It isn’t every day that you get to be a hero and not everyone stands up to protect the innocent. Temar and Chris took a risk and saved a little girl’s life as a result. Share this incredible story to remind others to be heroes today!
