This past week President Trump made a trip through the Middle East, making three major stops to represent the three major world religions. One of these stops was Vatican City in Rome, where Trump and members of his family met Pope Francis.
This meeting was for the President, but the First Lady had some meetings of her own to attend to. On Wednesday, Melania Trump surprised children at Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome with more than just her presence.
It was the First Lady’s voice that caught the children, and the hospital workers off guard.
Melania Trump spoke Italian to all of the children, their native language! This is the first time EVER that a First Lady has gone to a foreign country and spoken to the natives in a secondary language. She then went to the children’s intensive care unit, where the First Lady’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham described the scene as “very emotional.”
“She spoke to them in Italian, she signed bandages and she took lots of selfies,”
Finally, the First Lady had to leave, but not before participating in crafts and blowing kisses to the children who were too sick for her to speak to. This entire visit came out of a letter personally written by Melania asking the Pope if she could come to the hospital. A surprise that those children will not soon forget.
Melania Trump has often been criticized by people like Chelsea Handler, who said she would not interview the First Lady because “she can barely speak English.” Handler also included comments during the presidential election, such as:
“Trump said Melania will give two or three more speeches… Hopefully an interpreter will be present.”
“Tim Kaine delivered a speech entirely in Spanish. Still easier to understand than Melania” Via Twitter
Well, perhaps if Ms. Handler spoke any of the other four languages the First Lady speaks, including French, Italian, German, and Slovene, she may not have such an issue with her “accent.”
No matter how you look at it, Melania Trump made history for all of the right reasons. Share the First Lady’s heartwarming, historical moment!
