One week ago, Morgan Matthews purchased a firearm to defend herself. On Thursday, the 23-year-old woman used her gun to shoot a man who was attacking her in Raleigh, North Carolina.
A witness who called 911 told police he saw a woman being attacked by a man before she fired one shot, hitting him in the chest.
“Holy s***! Shots fired! The victim is down – one gunshot wound to the chest,” the 911 caller said.
Raleigh police confirmed that “Matthews fired her weapon to stop him from attacking her and stayed on the scene until police arrived.”
WRAL-TV has more details on the suspect:
Jonathan Tyrone Peace, 28, has been charged with common law robbery in connection with the incident Thursday in the 300 block of South Blount Street around 3 p.m., police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed for medical treatment to WakeMed. Information about his condition was pending.
Police said Morgen Matthews, 23, was walking on South Blount Street when Peace tried to rob her. She fired her weapon to stop him from attacking her, police said. She remained on the scene until police arrived, authorities said
Matthews texted her boyfriend after the scary incident and asked him to come to the scene because she had just “shot somone.” Her boyfriend, Dwayne Taylor, 22, shared the text messages, according to the News Observer.
“I just shot someone,” she texted.
“What???” Taylor replied.
“Come down here please. I just got attacked,” she answered.
Matthews reportedly obtained her gun permit last year, but had just bought a gun to carry last week. The timing couldn’t have been better for the brave woman.
Thank God for the Second Amendment.
